I will be writing about the use of comic and cartoon images and how they fit into the realm of high and low art.

    Laura here,
I'd like to choose a couple of comic books that have been turned into a movie and analyze how and why each format is different... how it affects the final piece when a film maker changes the story to fit their own needs or the needs of the market. I'll probably pick a comic that had a really bad film made from it and one where they did a better job of bringing the comic to life.

To write about the general relationship and translation between comics and film. I will be hitting on topics ranging from the obvious comic or graphic novel produced as a film, story boards and format.

    Elliot here,

I would like to write about personal memoirs as graphic novels. I will most likely look at both the Persepolis books by Marjane Satrapi and Jimmy Corrigan by Chris Ware. I think the idea of writing your personal memoirs in the form of a graphic novel make them easier to engage and somewhat more entertaining. I think it is easier to engage difficult subject matter in this way as well.

I am going to write on the use of imagery as a way to ground in reality the reader's understanding of abstract text. I will try to explore how this plays out in a range of subjects: children's books, comics, and more abstract illustrations of more abstract thought.

I'd also like to write about the personal memoir, looking at "Persepolis" and "A Child's Life" . I'd like to focus on the depiction of childhood--particularly growing up a girl--and childhood trauma in an illustrated format.

i am writing of how historical graphic artists such as goya and kollwitz dealt with man made nightmares such as war and poverty and comparing them to how contemporary artists (looked at in class) have graphically dealt with the same issues.

I plan to delve into the question of when does an author's creation cease to be the author's property and becomes the possession of the population at large. The ideas of intellectual property rights versus the traditional idea of the storyteller who doesn't own the words (or pictures) he or she uses, but rather relates the mythos of their culture. Probably wont uncover any concrete argument for either view, but it should prove an interesting conversation (at least to me.)
